12. San Diego – Zoo

Somehow in the 16 years we lived in Los Angeles, we never once made it down to San Diego. So, that became our next destination. TJ found us a spot at an amazing KOA just 15 minutes outside the city, & we settled in. We were amazed at the campground. All of the facilities were beautiful & immaculately kept. And, our spot was right across from the pool & hot tubs.

We had a lot of things we wanted to see in San Diego, but the first one was the zoo. We started off with the trolley tour & then rode the skylift up to the top of the park, walked our way back down & then zigzagged all around. We’d heard how huge the park is & how much walking it requires, but at the end of the day it didn’t feel nearly as immense as we’d expected (we’re also averaging 3-4 miles a day of walking, so maybe we’re just finally getting into shape?). Hopefully?

As an Ohio native, I have to say… the Columbus Zoo is still my favorite. While we had a wonderful time here, and we’re all so glad we went, nothing compares to the exhibits & habitats at the Columbus Zoo! Here’s a photo dump from our fun day!

This lady had just chased him out of the den!

We had lots of fun in the children’s discovery area. Also, our crew can’t resist a microscope and drawing app…

Pretty amazing to see inside an active beehive!
This bird’s tapping footsteps made us giggle.

Our day ended at the Andean Bear exhibit, watching a mama & her cubs! They were the cutest things ever. Mama literally picked up one of the cubs by the fur on his head.

Mama bear was sitting high up in this treehouse the entire time. We thought she was just munching on leaves & twigs, but we realized she was actually weaving the fluffy stuff and the fronds together into a giant nest!
After long days out, Stout needs a lot of cuddling & reassurance.
