22. Pioneertown & Noah Purifoy Desert Museum

We all woke up grumpy & tired from the hikes the day before – some days are like that – but we were determined to make the most out of the day. Pioneertown was first on our list. This is an 1880’s-inspired town, built by investors and Western actors in the 1940’s, who wanted to create a community and spot for filming in the desert. First, we had lunch at Pappy & Harriet’s, & then we took in some shows next door.

Afterward, we walked down the main street of Pioneertown. We saw a giant goat with a “Mayor” sash, walking around & we followed him to the cutest little baby goats ever. We spent a lot of time here, cuddling the 2-week-old babies & talking to the farmer (I found out he grew upon a dairy farm just like my grandpa did). They shear their goats, process the wool, & his wife spins it into yarn. They also make soap, yogurt, & woven goods!

We headed down the street to the Red Dog Saloon for some coffee – and found out they have a back room with Nintendo!

These desert roads sometimes look like optical illusions!

We then headed to the Noah Purifoy Desert Mueseum, featuring outdoor, large-scale sculptures made from junked materials.

We went back home & started planning our next stops. We spent all evening & half of the next day doing this! Things were getting hairy.
